Support Your Educators
If you have opted to have your children attend school virtually, the best thing you can do for them is to support their teachers in any way possible. You will be receiving a lot of communication from both the teacher and the school district, which is necessary to provide transparency, as well as peace of mind, during this time of uncertainty. But what is certain is that your child’s teachers are going to be there for them every step of the way, and you should, in turn, be there for them.
Assist your children when necessary, be their cheerleader but also be their teacher’s cheerleader. There’s a good chance your child’s teacher is having to juggle virtual and in-person lessons. Be there for them in any way you possibly can. If they are in need of supplies, make sure to get them what they need. Send them lunch, or buy them coffee. Teachers usually go the extra mile regardless of what is going on in the world, but this year they are being asked to do more than ever—a little kindness will help get them through this tough time.
But don’t forget to treat yourself every once in a while, too, as you are also doing more than ever before.
Create a Space for Learning
If you haven’t already, set up a space, if possible, that is designated for learning. If you can manage to work and listen to your children attend virtual class, have that space set up near where you are working so you are able to easily help your kids when they are in need, and you are able to monitor your children to ensure that they are paying attention as well.
If you are able, get a small desk for your student and let them decorate it how they want. Make sure they have all the supplies they need to be successful. And don’t forget to have healthy snacks and drinks readily available so they aren’t wasting valuable learning time looking for something to drink or eat.
Listen to Your Kids’ Needs
Sitting at a desk all day can be tedious and boring. Kids are bound to get wiggly and will need to move around from time to time. If they want to attend their classes virtually in another room, let them. If they need to just get up and move, encourage them with something engaging like a bike ride around the block.
Your kiddos will show you what they need through their actions. Be ready to listen and adapt within reason. What children are currently experiencing is unprecedented, and being there to comfort them and listen to their needs will go a long way. Focus on getting them to do their best and be there for them when they can’t.
