PBS KIDS Day in the Park Encourages Outdoor Activities

August 12, 2020

Spring is here and an initiative by PBS and the National Recreation and Park Association promotes a fun way for families to get outdoors. From March 26 to April 20, 2012 (leading up to Earth Day), PBS KIDS is showing themed on-air programming and local events to encourage kids to explore the outdoors and learn about the environment. One initiative, PBS KIDS Day in the Park, encourages parks and recreation agencies to host outdoor events in the park. Agencies that put on an outdoor event in April will be partnered with their local PBS stations for promotional opportunities. That way, the parks and recreation agencies get people involved, families and kids learn to love the outdoors, and PBS can promote a healthy and outdoor lifestyle to its youngest audience. Here are some events that PBS is suggesting:

  • Scavenger hunt in the park
  • Hiking tours or fun walks
  • Tree planting day
  • Family bike parade
  • Recycling events

Benefits for the community:Here at Active Network, Communities, we help recreation organizations get people involved in active programs. The PBS KIDS Day in the Park does just that and everyone benefits. In fact, research led by environmental psychologist, Nancy Wells, shows that children with more exposure to nature have reduced stress levels and longer attention spans. It's a win, win, win for the P & R world! So here’s to an active and healthy spring! To learn more about PBS KIDS Day in the Park, click here.
