COVID-19

With just about everyone being encouraged to #stayathome, people are coming up with new ways to stay entertained and avoid feelings of cabin fever and boredom. As such, there are several social media trends that are taking over and helping people feel closer, even as they’re social distancing.

Instagram Live

Instagram Live is not a new feature, but it has been getting a lot of attention lately, as entertainers have been using it to be on at-home parties for their fans. Instagram Live allows viewers to interact in real-time with the person recording. It doesn’t have to be long and it doesn’t have to have scripted content. Content that has done great lately includes:

  • Tutorials
  • Explainer videos
  • Q&A
  • Behind the scenes
  • Interviews
  • Trainings

TikTok

TikTok has been in the news for a while now, and it has no signs of slowing down. Although the app’s user base tends to skew younger, the content is finding its way outside of the native app, including on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. TikTok allows users to create short-form (up to 15 seconds) videos from their smartphone. 15 seconds doesn’t sound like a lot, but you have the ability to “thread” the videos together to make it a more cohesive message. It initially gained popularity for most users creating lip-synch videos of their favorite songs. Users are now creating challenges based off of popular songs and dance moves, encouraging their friends and followers to make one too.

Zoom

You may have heard of the company Zoom, which exploded in popularity amid the recent social distancing guidelines. Not only is it being used by businesses for conference calls as their employees are working from home. People are getting creative with the platform, hosting virtual “parties”and group video chats. People have been hosting virtual happy hours, co-working sprints, conferences and more.

As you can see, these trends all include a video component. So don’t be shy, get on camera and connect with your community!
