This is a guest post from Jessica Levine, Marketing Coordinator at Canton Leisure Services in Canton, Michigan.

The figures are staggering: More than one-third of American adults and children are obese,  resulting in conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Canton Leisure Services (CLS), ACTIVE Network customer and winner of the National Recreation and Park Association Gold Medal Award, is helping to relieve this epidemic on a local level through its four-month ‘100 Days to Health’ program.

Supported by a strong partnership with Southeast Michigan’s Oakwood Healthcare System, 100 Days annually begins in January and wraps up in late April at the popular Summit on the Park community center located in Canton, Michigan.

“Now in its 11th year, the program is designed for the duration of 100 days to help foster long-term healthy habits,” explained CLS Business Operations Coordinator Jeanette Williams. “There are a variety of classes, events, and programs offered throughout the 100 Days to help people explore their health and wellness options. We want people to experience different types of fitness to see what is right for them.”

Once registered, participants are welcome to all 100 Days – designated classes and seminars – true to its claim of variety, these include ZUMBA, water-walking, mediation, yoga, and lap-swimming. Personal chef and consultant Paul Penney also guides several healthy cooking demonstrations.

This year, 1,700 people participated across 72 classes. Three-hundred area residents joined us for the 100 Days kickoff party, 1165 fitness passes were used over the four months, and nearly 100 participants punched in for swimming throughout April.

“Through the years of offering 100 Days, we have seen many people return; some, strongly encouraging friends or family members to sign up along with them,” said Williams. “Regardless of your age, there is plenty to enjoy.”
